A majority of our members signed our Contract Now petition and dozens marched to deliver it on both campuses– at Longwood, to HMS Dean George Q. Daley and in Cambridge, to President Garber. Coming together in this way is crucial for winning a strong contract when the administration is stalling!

We got a tentative agreement on Job Posting!
The Harvard administration recently forced the removal of a prominent Black Lives Matter sign which had been displayed on campus since 2020. We believe that now, as in 2013 or 2020, it is necessary to protest the systemic violence oppressing Black people in America. As this is what this BLM sign stood for, this is what we want to stand for. We also believe that it is our right and duty to uphold the value of free speech as a core principle of university life. However, Harvard University management has been enacting anti-DEI and anti-free speech policies alongside rejecting our bargaining proposals to protect academic freedom. Harvard University must remain a place of free speech and inclusion. Standing together in unity and solidarity with Harvard Graduate Students Union (HGSU-UAW) and the Harvard Undergraduate Students Union (HUWU-UAW) and to protest the University muzzling our free speech, we encourage you to display Black Lives Matter signs on your windows on the morning of Thursday October 16th. Today was the hearing of the cases challenging federal funding cuts at Harvard, including AAUP and UAW vs the US Government, which is fighting these cuts on behalf of workers and researchers at Harvard and includes several HAW-UAW members’ stories in support of our case. Afterwards Kelsey, a HAW-UAW organizer, spoke at a rally outside about why we must keep fighting: “if we accept this as our new normal: it will be.”
These recent attacks have just strengthened my resolve as a union member. In this context, as always, when we stand together, we achieve great things. See full testimonial here.
In collaboration with the other campus unions (HGSU, HUWU, HUCTW, SEIU 32BJ, UNITE HERE Local 26), we recently sent the following statement to Harvard leadership. We believe there is much leadership could be doing to protect the University and we stand united in holding them accountable to the University’s own ideals.

Non-tenure-track faculty delivered a petition with almost 1,400 signatures calling for an end to time caps to top Harvard officials on Thursday as the group’s new union bargains for its first contract with the University.
The petition, signed by more than 350 tenure- and non-tenure-track faculty, alleged Harvard’s time-cap policy — which limits the time that lecturers and preceptors can be employed at Harvard to two, three, or eight years — is “out of step with peer institutions” and hurts the University’s educational offerings.

Months after our first request to bargain, the Harvard administration agreed to meet with us for the first time on September 12, 2024! We began with an opening statement from BC member Greg Given framing the context of our union, the work we do, and what we hope to achieve in our first union contract. See the bargaining update for more information.
We created six working groups to help us build a plan for winning improvements in key areas, identified by the membership. Those committees were: Timecaps/Reappointments, Protections Against Abuse and Harassment, International Workers Rights, Medical, Dental, & Vision Assistance, Childcare/Family Benefits and Compensation & Cost-of-living Adjustment.
Members from across campus began filling out bargaining surveys, helping our bargaining committee identify priorities in our bargaining as we prepare for negotiations!
We elected our first bargaining committee! Our elections committee held nominations and elections, and our bargaining committee was established with 13 total members!
We won our union election, which took place on April 3rd and 4th. Over two days of voting, through intense snow and winds, an overwhelming number of workers voted yes for our union!
We filed for our union election! With a supermajority of workers signed union authorization cards, we filed with the National Labor Relations Board for our union election.
